I make it a point to wake up everyday extra early so I can stroll into the TV room with my eyes barely open just to get a secret hour in to watch some football before I start my day. I have become rather obsessed with this beloved sport. Such passion and fortitude. NFL players represent the absolute best that humans can be. just getting to the NFL is an enviable feat, but actually standing out and playing great? Forget about it. and then there are those hall of famers. Because of where I'm at now, having to work twice as hard for no pay, but just because I believe in something, I find it a good way to start the day. you spend a half hour studying these guys and their achievements you just feel on top of the world and totally inspired. They give it their absolute every week. I'm talking they give more in a week of themselves, heart mind and body, than most men give in a year. You don't feel much like complaining after you see one of these guys take a massive hit from a 300 pound opponent and then get up from it again and again for over two hours. I have never been a lets watch a football game type of guy, and I don't think I ever will be. I don't have the time or the attention span to spend time watching a whole game, but I love the game, and I am in awe of the players and the coaches. I get a lot of inspiration out of them. when I was a kid I loved playing football. Everyday after school all through elementary school and junior high, either football or baseball in any empty lot we could find. I tried out for the high school football team when I was a freshman. This is a true story. I was probably no higher than 5’4” at the time. maybe 130 pounds. His name was coach Goulden. he was our PE coach and the football coach. He was a good guy, but I hated him that day. I was a bright eyed and eager young freshman. In the locker room he tells me “kid, at your size you aint gonna play football at this school. You gotta know that don't ya?” “well what about JV?” I asked. “Kid, you aint more than three feet tall. Waddaya weigh, a hundred pounds? You aint gonna play JV ball either. Not here.” “Well I'm an awesome receiver coach and a fast runner...” I told him. and I was. And I was tough as hell for my size. Hard to bring down. “Son you’re in high school now. this aint no sandlot football. You should try out for the soccer team if you wanna play sports. I'm sorry but quite frankly it’d be ridiculously irresponsible of me to even let you out on the field to try out with those other boys. They will kill you in the first five minutes. And then I have to explain to your poor mama why her baby boy is dead and gone all cause he wanted to try out for the football team. Go play soccer or baseball.” I did end up playing soccer for a season and didn't enjoy it too much. In fact I didn't enjoy it at all. I thought it was boring as hell. And I played baseball too. Thought that was boring too. But soon it didn't matter anyway because I formed my first rock band my freshman year, Rampage. And then everything changed in my world. I didn't even think about sports after that. I didn't even know what that word meant anymore. All I thought about was rock and roll.
